This contemporary basket border was designed in 1997 by Stanislaw Dziubak, since i saw this border i fell in love with it and have been experimenting by upscaling my work to create these statement pieces. I use fine willows on a large scale to achieve a look similar to that of a textile. I love how the colours of the willow pass diagonally across the surface of the basket to give a painterly finish. I also enjoy bending the traditional aspects of basketry and have added a bold band of red willow just below the border which picks up the warm coloured willows in the sides of the basket.
The willow is grown organically here in King’s Cliffe by my husband Kirk. This basket contains Dark Dicks, Packing Twine, Brittany Blue and Harrisons willows and has a green handle.
Originally designed as a non-functional basket, some customers who buy these baskets do find a use for them.
